Jesus’ ascension is not a question of abandonment and leaving
behind but an experience of new beginning towards great responsibility. It
marks the beginning of our mission to go and proclaim the good news through all
the earth. It is the time of fulfillment
of Jesus’ mission to continue his saving mission not only to the people of
Israel, but to all the nations as well.
God’s love and gift of salvation is not only limited for a few but it is
for all, for all who will accept it. In
the first gift of grace that we have received through baptism, we were already
entitled to take part in fulfilling the law of love as children of the heavenly
Father. We are blessed to be the bearers
of Light, the proclaimers of Truth and sign of Beauty. Our life therefore must be a concrete example
of this love, truth and beauty. This is
the great commission which the risen Christ gives to the whole church. All believers have been given a share in this
task. However, we have not been left
alone in this challenge, for the risen Lord promises us his Holy Spirit to support
us, to empower us and to work in us. When the Lord
Jesus departed physically from the apostles, they were not left in sorrow or
grief. Instead, they were filled with joy and with great anticipation for the
coming of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who gives
us the wisdom and the assurance that “He is with us all the time”. It is a promise of love, a promise of
confidence and a promise of security.
All we have to do is to trust in that promises.
Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to fulfill your Word and to
trust in your promises. I thank you for remaining always with me through the
gift of your Holy Spirit. May I become
the true bearer of light, truth and beauty so I may become a living example of
joy to those around me.
